World Congress of Families II
Geneva, Switzerland
November 14-17, 1999
Dear Delegate, Aloha and greetings from Hawai'i. In keeping with
WCFII's goal of affirming the natural family and also addressing
one of its purposes of "rallying organizations and individuals to
protect and fortify the natural family", I humbly submit the following:
On November 3, 1998 a historical event of crucial importance occurred
in the state of Hawai'i. After an intense eight-year battle with
homosexual activists and their supporters, pro-family forces resoundingly
defeated an attempt to legalize homosexual "marriage." Nearly 70%
of Hawai'i voters passed a constitutional amendment that protects
the sacred institution of marriage. (In Alaska, voters also passed
a constitutional amendment banning homosexual "marriage" with a
68% margin.)
How did we do it? By the mercy of God, we understood early in the
campaign that people of faith-Christians, Jews, Muslims, Hindus,
Buddhists, etc.-had to work together hand-in-hand to achieve the
victory. It was truly an example of "aloha spirit" in action. Even
though we acknowledged vast theological differences among us, we
knew we had commonality on this issue: marriage, by God's design,
has always been, and will always be, between opposite-sex couples.
As you well know, the international homosexual movement has launched
a full-scale war on the natural family, under the guise of "civil
rights" and/or "human rights." Their ultimate goal is to normalize
homosexuality-to change our hearts and minds, so that we will accept
homosexuality on an equal basis as heterosexuality. For the sake
of our children, grandchildren and future generations, we must never
allow this to happen.
In the past two years, I have traveled extensively meeting with
community and religious leaders in the Philippines, Taiwan, Australia,
New Zealand and the U.S. In many places, I have found pro-family
activists feeling frustrated and intimidated by the gains the homosexual
movement has made in the past 25 years. My message has been consistent:
transcend sectarian and ethnic/racial differences, and work together.
The outstanding victories in Hawaii and Alaska can be duplicated
in your community, if you follow this formula.
If you would like to find out more about the Hawai'i model, please

In His Service,
Mike Gabbard
